Converting plastic waste to fuel

Hello friend, welcome to Nepohits. In this post, we will see the method of converting plastic waste to fuel by using the pyrolysis technique. we will also know some uses of conversion of plastic waste into fuel. So let's begin our topic: convert waste plastic to fuel using the pyrolysis technique.

  Introduction of plastic waste

Plastic is a solid waste that is made of polymer. plastic is non-biodegradable waste that occupies space in the soil. we use plastic every day in our daily life. Almost in every sector, we use plastic including transportation, produce packaging, construction, textiles, buildings, electrical, electronics, and industrial machinery. As plastic makes our life simpler, it also destroys the environment day by day. According to research, nearly 5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastics were found in the ocean. Around 8 million plastic wastes are expelled into the ocean which helps to destroy the life of sea animals. So, it is very important to solve the problem of plastic wastes.

To solve the problem of waste plastic, we use mainly three options,

 1.Burning of waste plastic:

Is the burning of waste plastic a good solution to minimize the waste plastic? Absolutely not, Because when we burn the waste plastic, it melts and releases harmful fumes which increase several types of health problems like, causes rashes, nausea or headache, heart disease and damages the nervous system. Finally, we conclude that it is not an eco-friendly solution to resolve waste plastic.

2. Burying of waste plastic:

Most of us think that burying waste plastic is an eco-friendly solution. But as a result, this myth is going to be wrong because it is not an eco-friendly solution to minimize waste plastic. Plastic is a non-biodegradable substance which means that it doesn't decompose easily in soils and occupy some space in the soil. Burying waste plastic makes the soil polluted by harming the natural microbes which are essential for making the soil fertile.
As a result, we say that burying waste plastic is not an eco-friendly solution because it destroys the fertility rate of soil by killing the useful microbes present in the soil. Now, we have the last and best eco-friendly option is recycling plastic waste.

3.Recycling of waste plastic:

Is recycling waste plastic a good solution for the environment? Of course, it is the best and an eco-friendly solution for the environment because most of the plastic is a non-biodegradable substance and it melts easily when it is heated. We can modify the melted plastic into different shapes and sizes from which we can make new things like grocery keepers, comb, bottles, etc.

But in this content, we will also see how to convert waste plastic to fuel. So let's begin the procedure:

Converting  plastic waste to fuel by using the pyrolysis technique

Plastic pyrolysis is a very effective process where plastic is exposed to high temperatures in an oxygen-free environment. Pyrolysis is derived from the word 'Pyro' means 'heat 'and 'lysis' means 'breakdown'.

At any given temperature the molecule is in a vibrating stage which is called molecular vibration. Plastic is tough to break down and we have to sum a catalyst that helps to break the chemical bonds.
The substance which speeds up a chemical reaction but never exhausts by the reaction is known as a catalyst. Mostly fly ash obtained from coal combustion or zeolite etc. is used as catalysts.

Finally, waste plastic is converted into approximately 80% oil, 15%gas and 5% carbon black or ash. Now, let's move on to the procedure to convert waste plastic into fuel by using the pyrolysis technique.

Procedure to convert waste plastic to fuel

Let's have a look at how plastic is actually converted into a useful resource.

There are many steps involved to convert waste plastic to fuel by pyrolysis process but we are simply going to see five steps:

the procedure of converting plastic waste to fuel

Waste plastic is first sent into a pretreatment process that removes any foreign matter then sent into a plastic shredder.

The machine which is used to cut waste plastic into smaller pieces is known as a plastic shredder.

The smaller pieces of waste plastic are then sent into a densifier that compresses the smaller plastic pieces into dense material to facilitate easier storage or handling
then they are sent into a chamber where the pyrolysis of plastic takes place.

The plastic is heated up to 450 degrees Celsius in the subsistence of catalyst and in the absence of oxygen. The plastic is slowly melted and converted into gases state then.

The gas is sent into a condenser after that the condensation takes place. condensation means the conversion of vapor or gas into a liquid.

After that, it is sent into an oil refinery chamber where it is converted into fuel and finally, waste plastic is converted to approximately 80% oil, 5% carbon black or ash, and 15% gas.

Some uses of pyrolysis oil:

 1. This oil is used as heating material and sold to cement, glass, ceramic, electric power, factory, etc.

2.This oil is also used in heavy oil generators for electricity generation and it is deeply processed into diesel oil with distillation plants.

3.The final oil can be used in trucks, tractors, etc. 15% gas which is recycled into a furnace to heat the reactor instead of using coal, wood, oil, etc. and

4.The remaining carbon black or ash is used as slag for construction. It is also used as a replacement for coal.
