Light pollution and it's effect on human being, wild animals and nocturnal insects in 2024

In the 19th century, when Thomas Edison turned on the first light bulb, it marked a real revolution for changing the world. Night suddenly became a day. People can work, travel, party whatever the time of day. They all are achievable due to the innovation of the electric bulb. The inventors might not have expected that their invention will bring significant change over the world.

  Introduction of light pollution

light pollution

Light pollution is excessive human-made bright in the gloom environment. According to the researcher, It is estimated that more than 80% of the world population no longer experiences dark skies, where Singapore found the most light-polluted country in the world.

Due to excessive use of light has banished the true and natural darkness of the environment in many places. Light at night doesn't threaten only our health but also tremendous change because the increase of brightness at night time is new to evolution.

Today scientists are warning of the dangers of artificial light bulbs at night. We can see many adverse effects due to artificial light bulbs on human beings, wild animals, nocturnal animals, insects, etc.

Light pollution effects on a human being:-

light pollution affects human beings

●   Artificial light causes eye injuries, sleeplessness, obesity, and maybe even depression.

●   Some studies of shift workers have indicated that disclosure to light at gloom could boost the hazard of breast cancer. But why?

We need to understand that, There is a hormone that our brain makes called melatonin. In mammals, it gives the signal of darkness, and when we don't get that hormone  (due to over-exposed light in our apartment or as shift workers), then the working of this whole biological clock system becomes problematic.

 ●   This biological clock regulates sleep, digestion, and blood pressure.

Light pollution affects the life of wild animals

light pollution affects the birds

●   Corals, birds, and many other species of wildlife struggles due to light pollution.

●   Freshly hatched turtles should make their way into the sea. But light pollution near the shore can mislead them. They head inland and die.

Light pollution affects the life of the insect

●   Artificial light at night contributes to the decline in the insect population.

According to research, The decline in insects is nearly two billion every summer in Germany, Far alone. Such light also contributes to a decrease in nocturnal pollination activity.

●   A UK study found that where there's nighttime lighting, tree buds are earlier and lose their leaves later than elsewhere.

All these various effects on different creatures and plants together affect the environment as a whole.

With cheaper and more efficient light sources, the world is getting brighter every year. The International Dark-Sky Association rating that one-third of all outdoor lighting in the US is wasted, fulfilling no purpose. As fossil fuels are still the primary energy source, this contributes quite unnecessarily to air pollution and climate change.

So what can we do as individuals to control light pollution?

●   Turn on lights only when and where you need in. And then turn it off again or let a motion sensor turn it on and off for you.

●   Use lampshades, for instance, to block unwanted stray light.

●   Use lights with a warmer tone ( lower the intensity of light as possible).

Entire cities, even entire countries, can adopt such solutions to solve the problem of light pollution. France, for example, has banned sky beams, and in some places, set times when lights in public spaces have to be dimmed or switched off, as well as capping the brightness of lamps in ecological areas. Just as in France, we can also change the daily routine of using the led bulb or light where it is necessary. Little change can change the control of light pollution. We hope that you will also follow this routine in your home.

So we have finally discussed our topic about light pollution and its effect on human beings and the environment. So this is the information we need to update you. We hope that this article will change your way of using light or led bulbs. If you need to ask anything, please feel free to email or comment.
